Slippery Slope

For fans of Brazilian bossa nova jazz, here is a bright bossa composed and performed by tenor saxophonist Craig Buhler.    In addition, if you have ever taken a terrible tumble, these ski slope stumble scenes will give you a chuckle and remind you that you’re not alone.

Below is a chart for B flat instruments you can view or download, in case you’d like to perform this song.  (For charts in other keys or clefs, send me a comment listing your instrument, key, range, and preferred clef.)This song originated as a four-bar exercise which I was wood-shedding in all 12 keys.  Below is a recording of that effort along with a chart, if you would like to work on the lick.  My teacher used to insist, “You don’t really know a lick, until you can play it in all 12 keys!”   I have found this approach to yield tremendous results.

By the way, if you would like to learn to play melodies like this one by ear without a chart as I did, download “New Ears Resolution.”  It’s the revolutionary ear training method I developed using a foundation created by my teacher, Alvin L. Learned, founder and president of L.A.’s Westlake College of Music.
