Most of the transcriptions i’ve studied are by the great jazz masters. There probably are transcriptions by R&B players, but i haven’t studied them. Coming up working in R&B, rock, and pop bands, i learned all those licks by ear. Guys like King Curtis, Lee Allen, Gene “Daddy G” Barge, and Junior Walker really tore it up back then. When Jimi Hendrix came out, i tried to emulate him on tenor. Clarence Clemons knocked me out later on. These days, there are a thousand N. Texas State grads with chops to burn, but them original cats could move ya with one great note.
